This was my first time using Prestige. I noticed their truck on the road and there was enough info as to what they do printed on the truck to satisfy what was looking for. I called and they sent a very nice gentleman (owner) and we discussed my repair job and came to a reasonable price. Was told 2- 4 weeks and they were ready within that promised time. They called and we agreed to a time and day to do the job. Their men were very respectful of my house and property and did the job quickly and neatly to my 100% satisfaction. I definitely will call them again for my window and door work in the future!

Side Light Glass Replacement

Sidelights — the narrow glass panels that flank an entry door on one or both sides — are one of the most visible features of a Long Island home's front facade. When the glass cracks, breaks, or fogs, it affects the entire impression of the entryway. When it shatters completely, it creates an immediate security vulnerability: a broken sidelight next to a front door lock is an open invitation.
At Prestige Window Works, we provide professional sidelight glass replacement throughout Long Island, NY, serving homeowners across Nassau County and Suffolk County. We match your existing glass style precisely — whether that's clear single or double-pane glass, privacy glass, or tempered safety glass — and complete the replacement in most cases within a single visit.
All replacement glass in door-adjacent sidelight locations is supplied as tempered or laminated safety glass as standard — meeting current building code and improving your home's security. Every sidelight glass replacement comes with a 10-year warranty on insulated glass units and a 5-year warranty on all wood repairs. Call 516-908-8005 or fill out the form online for a free on-site estimate.

Sidelight Glass Problems We Fix

The glass panels flanking your entryway are essential for both curb appeal and natural light, but they are uniquely susceptible to structural shifts and seal failures. At Prestige Window Works, we specialize in addressing the specific vulnerabilities of these narrow units, ensuring they remain energy-efficient and securely integrated into your door system.
Pattern 62 Glass Replacement, Long Island
Cracked or Broken Sidelight Glass
Impact damage — from a stone, a ball, a door swinging too wide, or attempted break-in — is the most common reason for sidelight glass replacement. We treat broken sidelight glass as an urgent security situation and prioritize same-day or next-day appointments. We board up the opening on arrival if needed while we measure for the replacement glass. All replacement glass in door-adjacent applications is supplied as tempered safety glass as standard, meeting current building code requirements.
Foggy or Cloudy Insulated Sidelight Glass
Double-pane sidelight panels fail in the same way as any other insulated glass unit — the edge seal breaks down over time, moisture enters between the panes, and creates permanent fogging that can't be wiped away. This is very common in Manhasset and Roslyn where substantial entry doors with multi-panel sidelight systems were installed in the 1990s and 2000s and are now reaching end-of-seal-life. We replace the failed IGU panel only, leaving the frame in place, and supply the replacement with a 10-year warranty.
Decorative Glass Replacement
Many Long Island entry doors feature sidelights with etched, beveled, or patterned decorative glass that contributes significantly to the architectural character of the home. When decorative sidelight glass breaks, matching it correctly is a specialist task — standard replacement glass won't match the original pattern, obscurity level, or light-refracting character. See our full pattern glass types for the complete range available.
Privacy Glass Replacement
Sidelights alongside bathroom-adjacent entries, side doors in close-proximity to neighboring properties, and ground-floor panels where visibility is a concern all benefit from obscure privacy glass.

We supply and install all levels of obscurity — from lightly textured glass that admits full light while blurring detail, to heavily frosted panels that admit light while blocking all visual through-put.
Upgrading to Tempered Safety Glass
As noted above, sidelights within 24 inches of a door handle are required by current building code to be glazed with tempered safety glass. Many older Long Island homes have standard annealed glass in their sidelights. We replace it with code-compliant tempered glass as a standalone upgrade. Particularly recommended for homes in Great Neck, Kings Point, and Sands Point where high-value entry systems deserve appropriate security glass.
Transom Glass Replacement
Transom windows — the horizontal panels above a door — are closely related to sidelights and face the same glass failure modes. We replace transom glass in all styles: clear, decorative, obscure, and specialty shaped curved or arched transoms.

If your entry system includes both sidelights and a transom, we can address all panels in a single visit.
How Our Sidelight Glass Replacement Process Works
Step 1 — Measure and match
Step 2 — Order the glass
Step 3 — Remove and replace
Step 4 — Seal and inspect
Step 5 — Clean and hand over

Glass Options for Sidelight Replacement

Choosing the right glass for a sidelight replacement involves more decisions than a standard window. Here are the main options we supply:

Tempered Safety Glass

Required by code for all door-adjacent locations. When broken, shatters into granules rather than shards. Available in clear, lightly tinted, and obscure finishes. This is our standard recommendation for any sidelight within reach of the door lock.

Laminated Safety Glass

An alternative to tempered glass — a plastic interlayer bonded between two glass panes holds the panel together when broken rather than allowing it to shatter. Laminated glass provides better security than tempered (a broken laminated panel cannot simply be reached through) and is significantly quieter.

Insulated Double-Pane (IGU)

For sidelights in thermally important locations — next to a frequently used entry door, in a cold-facing wall, or in a drafty entry hall — double-pane insulated glass dramatically improves the thermal performance of the entry. Available with Low-E coating to reduce heat loss in winter.

Decorative and Pattern Glass

Reed, rain texture, glue chip, aquatex, flemish, baroque, and custom etched patterns available. We match to your existing entry door glass style wherever possible.

Obscure and Privacy Glass

Available in multiple obscurity levels from light texture to fully opaque. Acid-etched finishes available for a clean, contemporary appearance. Sandblasted custom designs available on request.
Sidelight Glass Replacement for All Door Brands
Sidelights are an integral part of an entry door system, and the glass panel dimensions, frame profile, and glazing method are brand-specific. We replace sidelight glass in systems by all major entry door manufacturers:

  • Therma-Tru doors — the most common entry door brand on Long Island, with a wide range of sidelight configurations

  • Andersen doors — including full-lite and partial-lite sidelight systems

  • Pella doors — including the Pella Architect Series sidelight panels

  • JELD-WEN doors — standard and decorative sidelight glass replacement

  • Marvin doors — including the Ultimate and Signature sidelight systems

  • Kolbe doors — custom sidelight glass to Kolbe frame specifications

THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS

Is sidelight glass required to be tempered?
Yes — by current building code, any glass within 24 inches of a door and within 60 inches of the floor must be tempered safety glass. Many older Long Island homes have standard annealed glass in their sidelights, installed before this code requirement existed. We assess every sidelight we service and recommend upgrading to tempered glass where it isn't already in place. The cost difference is minimal and the safety improvement is significant.
Can you match my existing decorative sidelight glass?
In most cases, yes. We source glass from specialist decorative glass suppliers and carry physical samples of all major patterns. We assess your existing glass style on-site and identify the closest available match before ordering. Where an exact match isn't available, we discuss alternatives — sometimes replacing both sidelights with a matched pair produces a better result than trying to match one to an existing panel that's no longer in production.
My sidelight is foggy — does the whole door system need to be replaced?
No. Foggy sidelight glass means the insulated glass unit seal has failed, but the door and frame are almost always fine. We replace the glass panel only, leaving the existing frame and door system in place. This costs a fraction of a full door replacement and is completed in a single visit for standard sizes.
How much does sidelight glass replacement cost in Long Island?
Standard clear tempered sidelight glass replacement cost typically depends on panel size. Insulated double-pane sidelight panels are usually bit more expensive than decorative or patterned glass, again — depending on the pattern and custom sizing required. We provide a written on-site quote before any work begins.
My sidelight is right next to the lock — should I be concerned about security?
Yes, and you're right to think about it. A sidelight within reach of the door lock is the most common entry point for break-ins that don't involve kicking a door. Upgrading to laminated glass — which stays in one piece when broken rather than shattering — is the most effective glass-based security improvement available for this situation. We discuss all options with you at the estimate stage.
Do you replace transom glass above the door as well as sidelights?
Yes. Transom glass replacement — including arched and shaped transoms — is part of the same service. We can address the full entry glazing system (door glass panels, sidelights, and transom) in a single visit.
